In Montréal is afgelopen maandag de Canadese zangeres Kate McGarrigle overleden. Ze is 63 jaar geworden.

Kate McGarrigle was een Canadese folk music zangeres. In 1975 scoorde ze met haar zus Anna een grote hit in Nederland met "Complainte pour Sainte-Catherine". Bij optredens stonden bij tijd en wijle ook haar kinderen Rufus en Martha Wainwright op het podium.
Het laatste album waar Kate McGarrigle aan meewerkte was het prachtige "Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris" van haar dochter Martha. Een paar weken voor haar dood trad ze nog op samen met Rufus en Martha in de Royal Albert Hall in Londen.
Kate McGarrigle leed sinds 2005 aan kanker.

David Bowie, Wild is the Wind

In 1976 bracht David Bowie een van de beste lp's uit zijn carrière uit. "Station to Station" was het negende album in een reeks die de richting van de popmuziek in de jaren zeventig voor een belangrijk deel bepaald heeft en waarvan de invloed ook in de hedendaagse pop nog voelbaar is. Bovendien staat op deze klassieker een van de mooiste covers uit de popgeschiedenis.

Station to Station, jaar: 1976

De drijvende gitaar van Carlos Alomar aan het begin van de titelsong zorgde voor een ware sensatie. Tijdens de Serious Moonlight Tour in 1983 beleefde ik in de Rotterdamse Kuip met eigen ogen en oren hoe Alomar als een ware magiër het geluid van een ouderwetse stoomlocomotief op vaart uit zijn gitaar toverde. Het hele stadion ging aan boord en werd door Bowie en de band meegenomen op reis door zijn gehele oeuvre.

"Station to Station" is een klasse apart en bevat, samen met "Low" wellicht het beste werk uit zijn carrière:

1. "Station to Station", "The return of the Thin White Duke / Throwing Darts / In lovers' eyes", tijdloos mooi,
   
2. Het prachtige haunting "Golden Years",
   
3. "Word On A Wing" met zijn typische desolate begin en einde,
   
4. "TVC15" dat begint als een bijna saloon-achtig dansnummer,
   
5. "Stay" met zijn opzwepend begin en een uitstekende gitaarsolo; wellicht is "Stay" niet een typisch Bowie-nummer, maar het is wel een rock-nummer bij uitstek... zo worden ze niet veel meer gemaakt!
   
6. En dan "Wild Is The Wind". De eerste keer dat ik het hoorde werd ik er meteen verliefd op. Om de een of andere reden vond ik dit wel een typisch Bowie-nummer. En laat uitgerekend dit nummer nu een cover zijn.

"Wild Is The Wind" is namelijk geschreven door Dimitri Tiomkin en Ned Washington, die het schreven voor Johny Mathis. Mathis nam het nummer op voor de film "Wild is the Wind" uit 1957. Echt bekend werd het in de uitvoering van Nina Simone.

De tekst is prachtig en poëtisch:

You touch me
I hear the sound of mandolins
You kiss me
With your kiss my life begins
You're spring to me
All things to me
Don't you know you're life itself

Lees het nog een keer. Luister daarna naar Johny Mathis, Nina Simone en David Bowie.

Deze video stamt uit 1981. Dat jaar werd een bewerkte versie uitgebracht door RCA ter promotie van het verzamelalbum ChangesTwoBowie. Regisseur was David Mallet, die de video opnam in grijstinten. Een prachtrig voorbeeld van less is more.

Zanger Teddy Pendergrass, 26 mrt. 1950 - 13 jan. 2010

Theodore DeReese 'Teddy' Pendergrass was vier jaar oud toen in 1954 Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes werd opgericht. Jaren later speelde hij drums bij The Cadillacs, totdat die band eind jaren '60 samenging met Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. Volgens een anekdote sprong Pendergrass tijdens een optreden van de groep in 1972 van het podium en begon uit volle borst te zingen. Meteen daarna vroeg Melvin hem leadzanger van zijn groep te worden. Datzelfde jaar nog tekenden ze een contract bij het label Philadelphia International Records, een dochter van CBS. Dat contract betekende het begin van het grote succes voor Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.

 

Met het contract op zak en met Pendergrass als leadzanger, hadden ze een aantal internationale hits met ballads als "I Miss You" en "If You Don't Know Me By Now" (1972). Deze ballads waren doordrenkt van de typische jaren '70 "Philly Sound". Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes bleef bestaan tot aan de dood van zijn naamgever in 1997. Teddy Pendergrass en Harold Melvin konden het echter minder goed met elkaar vinden. Hij had de groep daarom al in 1976 verlaten om een carrière als soloartiest te beginnen.

In 1977 bundelde hij zijn krachten met grootheden als Lou Rawls, Billy Paul, The O'Jays, Archie Bell en Dee Dee Sharp in de gelegenheidsformatie "Philadelphia All Stars". Nadien werd Dee Dee Sharp zijn producer en begeleidde hem tijdens een uiterst succesvolle solocarrière.
Hij bleef onder contract van Philadelphia International Records. Zijn eerste solo album heette simpelweg "Teddy Pendergrass" en werd uitgebracht in 1977. Daarna volgden nog de albums "Life is a Song Worth Singing" (1978), "Live Coast to Coast and Teddy" (1979), "TP" (1980), "It's Time for Love" (1981), "This One's for You" (1982) en "Heaven Only Knows" (1983).

De laatste twee albums bevatten de laatste opnames van Pendergrass voordat hij betrokken raakte bij een ernstig auto ongeluk op 18 maart 1982. De rest van zijn leven zou hij doorbrengen in een rolstoel. Pendergrass heeft er nooit een geheim van gemaakt dat hij het heel moelijk gehad heeft met zijn verlamming. Hij zei ooit over die periode "I got to the point where I wanted to take my own life".
Het weerhield hem er uiteindelijk niet van verder te gaan met zijn carrière. Zijn eerste optreden na het ongeluk was tijdens Live Aid in 1985, samen met Ashford & Simpson. Een jaar later zong hij met Whitney Houston het duet "Hold me", een nummer van haar debuutalbum, tot een internationale hit. Toch duurde het jaren voordat hij zijn lot accepteerde.

Ook in de jaren negentig maakte Pendergrass nog opnamen. In 1996 trad hij zelfs nog op in de gospel musical "Your Arms Too Short to Box with God". In 2006 kondigde hij aan zich terug te trekken uit de muziekwereld. Vorig jaar werd bij hem de diagnose darmkanker gesteld. De 'Teddybear' overleed in het Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia op 13 januari 2010. Hij werd net geen zestig jaar oud.

Teddy Pendergrass werd vijfmaal (in 1979, 1982, 1989, 1992 en 1994) genomineerd voor de "Best Male R&B Vocal Performance" Grammy Award maar won er niet een. The Caddillacs werden in 2004 opgenomen in de 'Vocal Goup Hall of Fame'.

Review: Bill Champlin, "No Place Left To Fall" - WOW! - English version

This is the English translation of a Dutch review on the album "No Place Left to Fall" by Bill Champlin:

Expectations are always high set for a new Bill Champlin album, even more so if the album is his first in 13 years. "No Place Left to Fall" was released on September 24, 2008. In my preview I described the album with the old Borg statement: 'Resistance is futile'. Some 6 months after I ordered the album, I have finally gotten around to listening to it. And on further consideration I still stand by that conclusion.

No 'Place Left to Fall', Year: 2008

"No Place Left To Fall" is a cd with a soul crunching Al Green-like organ sound, full of westcoast-to-the-second-degree: sexy, rocking, jazzy and soulful. It gives quite a thrill to put on an album by a veteran and to have the very first sounds confirm that he hasn't lost his touch.

William Bradford Champlin: this guy obviously doesn't have to prove anything to anyone anymore. Whenever he releases an album, he does so because he enjoys doing so. And boy, has he ever enjoyed himself on "No Place Left To Fall"! His appetite for music is so contagious, it's sheer impossible to sit still and listen to it.

The album cover shows an older guy (sorry Bill!). This is a bit of a shock, since I've known him as a young musicion on albums like "Runaway" (1971) and "Single" (1978). I guess it makes me realize I must have aged quite a bit as well. But make no mistake: in the meantime Champlin has had an awesome career, spanning more than forty years (yep, that's four-zero).

"No Place Left To Fall" comes in two versions; I bought the 'deluxe' version that includes a dvd. The dvd offers a great insight in the musical development that Champlin went through.
What's more, it is great to see the maestro at work. It is a pity that westcoast musicians like Champlin, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Jay Graydon, Robbie Dupree, Bill LaBounty, Bobby Kimball are rarely ever to be seen on the European main land. And that's why such a deluxe version with dvd is almost a must-have for the true fan; it is the second best thing to a live performance that you'll ever get, in Europe at least.

The Sons of Champlin

It's great to see and hear him talk about his early musical influences like Lou Rawls ("This guy was like my teacher"), The Beatles and Bob Dylan, about his career (the first band he ever played in was a school band called Opposite Six: "we backed up The Righteous Brothers while we were in high school") and to hear him talk about his new album ("Man, I realize how fortunate I am to be able to do this."). Of course, he pays attention to the Sons of Champlin as well. And he introduces the one and only son of Champlin, his son Will.

However, it is, of course, all about the music. And boy, is this great music!

Soulful organs that make you grimace in extacy, soul touching guitar solos, grinding rockmusic you have to move your body to and fantastic vocal harmonies with some of the best voices in westcoast music. All that, and more, can be found on Bill Champlin's new album. If you are into rock and westcoast, this cd simply must be part of your collection. I had to order it separately, here in the Netherlands, since the deluxe version was not readily available here and it was sold out at Amazon at the time. I finally got a Japanese import version, which I am happy to say had a booklet in English, including credits, lyrics and liner notes.

The songs

Most of the songs were written by Bill Champlin himself. Songwriting credits also go to Jay Graydon (who at the time was also working on the first album for his new project JaR, called 'Scene 29'), Bill's son Will, his wife Tamara, Michael Caruso and Bruce Gaitsch.

The opening song is "Total Control". It's his calling card. Listen, be overwhelmed and let it warm you up. But be warned: it does take total control of your senses!
"Tugging on your Sleeve" (#2) also makes it impossible to sit still. People keep looking at me with a mildly annoyed expression when I listen to this song on my iPod on the train: I just cannot keep sitting still!
"The Truth" (#3) has this great drive; it really is a strong and powerful song, which is completely fitting in the tradition of Champlin's earlier work. Great guitar solo!
The title song "No Place Left To Fall" is one of the calmer songs on the album. It makes a great contrast with 'The Truth'. Also, the beautiful vocal arrangements make it one of the album's highlights.
From the very first piano chord on "Looking for you" (#6) has a distinct gospel-like quality. This is confirmed by the organ and the soulful choir. If the word 'you' in "I keep looking for you" were written with a capital Y, it would have been real gospel: pure blue-eyed westcoast gospel! I love this song!
"Never Been Afraid" (#7) was written by Bill Champlin himself and it displays his incredible craftmanship. It could just as well have been a Chicago song. This is the purest form of westcoast music possible with a fine solo performance by Steve Lukather (he still rocks!). And if you listen carefully, whom do you hear...? You guessed it: it's Chicago's former lead singer Peter Cetera. Great song as well!
"Never Let Go" (#11) is heavily jazz influenced. It starts off with a lovely 'voice-jam'. You can hear the influences of Supertramp and Chicago. It must be soooo fulfilling to have a great voice and to use it to have such a 'voice-jam' with friends and colleagues. Can't get enough if this.
The funkiest song, without a doubt, is "Stone Cold Hollywood". It has a grinding rythm, some fantastic horns, great organ sound and wonderful guitar riffs. Need I say more?
The last song "All Along" also is a typical Chicago song ("... you'll recognize the sound ..."). It ends in a true wall of sound, with a great climax. This is one of the most appropriate last songs on any album I've ever heard.

Conclusion

I have read quite a few reviews on this album that say it is not an innovative album. Honestly, I couldn't care less. I love any album that makes me forget everyday life for a moment everytime I listen to it. And "No Place Left to Fall" does just that! Music is about music: enjoy it, feel it in your bones, in your heart and in your soul. "No Place Left to Fall" does that too and very well indeed!

In short: "No Place Left to Fall" is an album Bill Champlin can be genuinely proud of. Actually, everyone that worked on the album can be really proud of it. No, it might not be innovative, but it is a logical next step in Champlin's impressive career. The jazz, blues and r&b influences make an excellent mix with the all-present westcoast sound.

Champlin has been called a musician's musician on many occasions. This album proves he has really earned this 'title'. Any lover of great music cannot leave this album untouched!

Review: Bill Champlin, "No Place Left To Fall" - WOW!

'Wat van ver komt is lekker', gaat het gezegde. En dat geldt ook voor muziek waar je lang op hebt moeten wachten. Dat is voor ons Europeanen zeker het geval met "No Place Left To Fall", het nieuwe album van Bill Champlin en zijn eerste solo album in 13 jaar, dat werd uitgebracht in september 2008. In mijn 'vooraankondiging' schreef ik al "Resistance is futile". Ruim 6 maanden nadat ik het album besteld had heb ik het nu eindelijk met aandacht in zijn geheel kunnen beluisteren. En ook bij nadere beschouwing blijft die eerdere constatering overeind.

"No Place Left to Fall", Jaar: 2008

"No Place Left To Fall" is een cd met zinderende Al Green-orgeltjes, vol westcoast tot de tweede macht: sexy, rockend, jazzy en soulvol. Wat is het toch heerlijk om zo nu een dan een cd van een oudgediende in huis te halen en met de allereerste klanken bevestigd te krijgen dat hij het niet verleerd is.

William Bradford Champlin: bewijzen hoeft deze man natuurlijk niets meer. Als hij een cd uitbrengt, is dat omdat hij er zin in heeft. En wat heeft hij er op "No Place Left To Fall" weer zin in! De zin spettert van elk nummer af. Je kunt er niet stil bij blijven zitten.

De hoes laat een wat oudere man zien. Dat is wel even schrikken, want ik ken hem nog als jonge muzikant van albums als "Runaway" (1971) en "Single" (1978). Maar vergis je niet: in de tussentijd heeft Champlin wel een ontzagwekkende carrière van ruim 40 jaar (jawel, veer-tig!) achter de rug.

Van "No Place Left To Fall" heb ik de luxe versie in huis gehaald, wat in dit geval betekent dat er een DVD bij wordt geleverd. Op die DVD krijg je een uitstekend inzicht in de muzikale ontwikkeling van Champlin.
Bovendien is het leuk om de meester aan het werk te zien. Het is al zo jammer dat westcoast muzikanten als Champlin, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Jay Graydon, Robbie Dupree, Bill LaBounty, Bobby Kimball zo weinig naar Europa komen. Daarom is zo'n luxe versie met DVD bijna wel een 'must' voor de ware liefhebber; het is de 'second best thing' na een live optreden en voor Youtube om de man te zien spelen.

Leuk is ook te horen hoe hij praat over zijn invloeden zoals Lou Rawls ("This guy was like my teacher"), The Beatles en Bob Dylan, over zijn carrière (de eerste band waarin hij speelde was een schoolband met de naam Opposite Six: "we backed up The Righteous Brothers while we were in high school") en over zijn nieuwe album ("Man, I realize how fortunate I am to be able to do this."). Natuurlijk wordt er aandacht besteed aan de Sons of Champlin. Bovendien wordt de enige echte son of Champlin, zijn zoon Will, voorgesteld.

Maar waar het uiteindelijk natuurlijk allemaal om draait is de muziek. En jongejongejonge, wat is dat een likkebaardend lekkerlessend kloekklinkend frisdrinkend stemmensmerend razendflitsend snelvibrerend koel koel koel sissende muziek!

'Grimassende gezichten'-orgeltjes, gitaarsolo's die je ziel raken, stampende rockmuziek waar je onmogelijk bij stil kunt blijven zitten en fantastische samenzang met een aantal van de beste stemmen uit de westcoast music. Dat allemaal zit in het nieuwe album van Bill Champlin. Als je iets hebt met rock en westcoast, dan mag deze cd niet ontbreken in je collectie. Ik heb hem overigens apart moeten bestellen, omdat de CD+DVD versie op dat moment bij bol.com niet leverbaar was en bij amazon.com uitverkocht. Mijn exemplaar is een Japanse import-versie, die gelukkig wel is voorzien van een compleet Engelstalig boekje met credits, lyrics en liner notes.

De nummers

Het merendeel van de nummers is geschreven door Bill Champlin zelf. Hij werd daarbij ondermeer terzijde gestaan door Jay Graydon (die op dat moment ook aan het werk was voor het eerste album van zijn nieuwe project JaR, "Scene 29"), zijn zoon Will, zijn vrouw Tamara, Michael Caruso en Bruce Gaitsch.

Het openingsnummer is "Total Control". Hiermee geeft Champlin meteen zijn visite kaartje af. Luister en laat je overdonderen en meeslepen.
Ik merk dat ik het telkens weer onmogelijk vind stil te blijven zitten bij "The Truth" (#3). Het nummer heeft een enorme drive, het is een sterk en krachtig nummer, geheel in de traditie van Champlin's eerdere werk.
Het volgende nummer is het titelnummer. "No Place Left To Fall" is een van de rustigere nummers op het album. Het staat in mooi contrast met "The Truth". Het valt niet alleen op door die rust, maar ook door de prachtige vocale arrangementen.
"Looking for you" (#6) is vanaf de eerste klanken een gospel-achtig nummer. Het orgeltje en het soulvolle koortje bevestigen dat. Als het woord 'you' in "I keep looking for you" met een hoofdletter geschreven was, dan was het onvervalste gospel geweest, blue-eyed westcoast gospel!
"Never Been Afraid" (#7) is geschreven door Champlin zelf en het is echt vakwerk! Het had overigens zo op een Chicago album kunnen staan. Dit is westcoast van het zuiverste water met een prachtige solo door Steve Lukather. En wie horen we daar in het achtergrondkoortje? Jazeker, Peter Cetera! Prachtig nummer! Ik denk dat het mijn favoriet is op dit album.
Het nummer "Never Let Go" (#11) is een nummer met veel jazz-invloeden. Het begint met een heerlijke jazzy 'stem-jam'. Je hoort er de invloeden in van Supertramp en Chicago. Wat moet het heerlijk zijn een goede zangstem te hebben en zo'n 'stem-feestje' te kunnen houden met vrienden en gelijkgestemden.
Het meest funky nummer is ongetwijfeld "Stone Cold Hollywood". Het heeft een geweldig drijvend ritme en heerlijke funky gitaarrifjes. Need I say more?
Ook de afsluiter "All Along", een typisch Chicago-nummer ("... you'll recognize the sound ..."), is een nummer dat staat als een huis met vier onvervalste klankmuren.

Conclusie

Ook over dit album hebben verschillende recensenten gezegd dat het zo weinig venieuwend is. Mijn antwoord op dergelijke kritiek heb ik al gegeven in het artikel "Vernieuwend": muziek draait om muziek, geniet er van en laat het tot je doordringen, 'vernieuwend' en 'mooi' zijn geen synoniemen.

Samenvattend: "No Place Left to Fall" is een album waar Champlin trots op mag zijn. Sterker nog: elke artiest die er aan meewerkte mag er trots op zijn. Nee, vernieuwend is het niet, maar het is wel een logische ontwikkeling in de toch al indrukwekkende carrière van Bill Champlin. De jazzy, bluesy en r&b invloeden laten zich uitstekend mengen met de alom aanwezige westcoast.
Champlin wordt wel eens de musician's musician genoemd; op dit album bewijst hij die titel met trots te kunnen dragen. Liefhebbers mogen dit album niet laten liggen!
