Kaarten North Sea Jazz 2009 te koop vanaf 9 mei

BB King treedt op tijdens het North Sea Jazz Festival 2009; zijn beeltenis is te zien in de 'header' van northseajazz.com

Even een kleine reminder voor de liefhebbers: op woensdag 6 mei wordt het gehele programma van North Sea Jazz 2009 bekend gemaakt. En drie dagen later, op zaterdag 9 mei, start de reguliere verkoop. Vanaf die dag kan men dagkaarten kopen voor 75 Euro. Tot die tijd zijn kaarten nog met korting te koop in de 'Early Bird Ticket Sale'.

Dit jaar zal de beroemde gitarist en zanger George Benson tijdens een bijzonder concert een eerbetoon brengen aan Nat King Cole, de legendarische jazz-zanger, pianist en songwriter die in 1965 overleed. Naast Benson zullen ondermeer de volgende artiesten optreden: Burt Bacharach, John Scofield, het Anthony Braxton Diamond Curtain Wall Trio, McCoy Tyner feat. Bill Frisell, Duffy, Herbie Hancock & Lang Lang, James Taylor en Jamie Cullum. Heel bijzonder is natuurlijk dat BB King zal optreden. De 83-jarige bluesgitarist is zo'n grote legende; die mag je natuurlijk gewoon niet missen!
En ook Gino Vanelli, de Canadese jazz-rock zanger en multi-instrumentalist die al weer een tijd woonachtig is in Nederland, is weer van de partij. Hij laat dit weten via zijn blog op northseajazz.com.

Mooimuziek durft hier trouwens nog wel een gokje te wagen met de voorspelling dat Sabrina Starke dit jaar ook op North Sea Jazz staat. Vorig jaar was ze al te horen in North Sea Jazz Around Town. Als Rotterdamse is ze er dit jaar natuurlijk gewoon bij. Ik sta vooraan! Ik hoop wel dat ze haar dan niet op dezelfde dag en tijd als Duffy programmeren, of BB King of Burt Bacharach of Gino Vanelli of.... Zucht, zoveel mooie muziek, zoveel keuzes!

George Benson opent North Sea Jazz 2009 tijdens het Grolsch North Sea Jazz Gala op 8 juli om half acht 's avonds, waarvoor apart kaarten aangeschaft moeten worden. Het North Sea Jazz Festival zal dit jaar worden gehouden op 10, 11 en 12 juli, natuurlijk in het Ahoy complex in Rotterdam.

Adele op North Sea Jazz Festival 2009

Deze week maakte de organisatie van North Sea Jazz 2009 bekend dat ook Adele op zal treden op het bekende festival.

De jonge, zeer getalenteerde Engelse zangeres Adele won dit jaar maar liefst twee Grammy’s. Haar debuutalbum "19" werd in 2008 platina en stond maar liefst vijf weken op nummer 1 in de Album Top 100. De afgelopen anderhalf jaar bestormde ze de hitlijsten met haar singles "Hometown Glory", "Chasing Pavements" en meest recentelijk de Bob Dylan cover "Make You Feel My Love". De 21-jarige zangeres heeft in haar prille carrière reeds gewerkt met beroemde producenten als Jim Abiss, Eg White en Mark Ronson.

De Britse zangeres Duffy zal ook optreden op het NSJ 2009.

This week the organization of North Sea Jazz 2009 announced that Adele will be performing at the renowned festival.

The young and very talented English singer Adele won no less than two Grammy's this year. In 2008 her debut album "19" turned into platinum and topped the Album Top 100 for no less than five weeks. The past year and a half she stormed the charts with her singles "Hometown Glory", "Chasing Pavements" en most recently with the Bob Dylan cover "Make You Feel My Love". In her young career the 21-year-old singer already colaborated with famous producers such as Jim Abiss, Eg White and Mark Ronson.

British singer Duffy will also perform at the NSJ 2009.

Vandaag start de reguliere kaartverkoop voor het North Sea Jazz Festival 2009

Vanaf vandaag kunnen festivalgangers dagkaarten kopen voor North Sea Jazz 2009. Afgelopen woensdag werd het programma van het festival bekend gemaakt.

Tot vandaag waren er al kaarten te koop, maar dit gold slechts voor de driedagen- en all-inkaarten. Hiermee is de Early Bird Ticket Sale teneinde.

Het festival vindt plaats van 10 juli tot en met 12 juli 2009. Het zal, zoals in voorgaande jaren, vooraf worden gegaan door het gratis toegankelijke North Sea Jazz Around Town. Dit evenement duurt twee weken, en wel vanaf zaterdag 27 juni tot en met zondag 12 juli 2009.
Op de site is te lezen dat er in deze periode ruim 150 concerten gegeven worden verdeeld over de stad. Daarnaast vinden er nog diverse andere activiteiten plaats zoals: tentoonstellingen, rondvaarten met live jazz, jazz cruises, masterclasses, film- en videopresentaties.

Burt Bacharach op North Sea Jazz 2009

Duffy, Herbie Hancock & Lang Lang, B.B. King, James Taylor, Jamie Cullum, John Scofield, het Anthony Braxton Diamond Curtain Wall Trio en McCoy Tyner feat. Bill Frisell behoren tot de acts die zijn aangetrokken voor het North Sea Jazz festival 2009.
En vandaag werd bekend dat ook Burt Bacharach zal optreden tijdens de 34ste editie van het festival.

Het mag gerust wereldnieuws genoemd worden dat de nestor van de easy listening een concert geeft op een van de grootste muziek evenementen ter wereld. Het zal bovendien zijn eerste concert in Nederland zijn.

Bacharach zal er geen zweethanden of zenuwtrekjes meer van krijgen. In zijn lange carrière trad hij op met grootheden als The Carpenters, Marlène Dietrich, Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Elvis Costello en Rufus Wainwright.
Zijn muziek werd verder vertolkt door onder meer The Beatles (het nummer "Baby It's You" werd opgenomen op 11 feb. 1963 voor het album "Please Please Me". Naderhand verscheen het nog op het album "Introducing... The Beatles"), Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes ("Walk On By" op het album "Hot Buttered Soul") en Trijntje Oosterhuis.

Bacharach wordt dit jaar 81.

Onvervalste oude witte mannen blues van Renegade Creation

Renegade Creation is de nieuwe band van Michael Landau en de naam van het nieuwe en eerste album van de groep. De rock- en blueshelden laten op dit album horen waar ze goed in zijn: lekkere blues, ruige gitaren, uitstekende composities en goede stemmen. Niets nieuws onder de zon dus. Maar - WOW! - wat een lekkere plaat!

De hoes van "Renegade Creation", jaar: 2010

Michael Landau (zang, gitaar), Robben Ford (zang, gitaar), Jimmy Haslip (basgitaar) en Gary Novak (drums, basgitaar) hebben het allemaal al gedaan en meegemaakt: dure shows, mooie albums, succes, samenwerken met beroemdheden... bewijzen hoeven ze dus niets meer. Dat betekent echter niet dat ze een tamme plaat hebben afgeleverd. Nee, ambitieus is hij wellicht niet, maar hij zit vol met hoogstandjes, vette gitaarrifs en gewoon goede muziek. "Renegade Creation" was duidelijk geen 'moetje'!


Voor degenen die de afgelopen decennia in winterslaap hebben doorgebracht: Michael Landau (1958) is een sessie muzikant die onder meer samenspeelde met Seal, Dionne Warwick, James Taylor, America, Richard Marx, Fee Waybill, David Foster, Miles Davis, George Duke, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Chicago, Tom Scott, Waddy Wachtel, Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones, Michael Mcdonald, Steve Lukather, enfin... de lijst met beroemdheden is te lang om op te noemen.

Robben Ford (1951) mag met recht nu al legendarisch genoemd worden. Deze gitaargod heeft zijn roots liggen in de Jazz en speelde onder meer voor en samen met Jimmy Witherspoon, Gregg Allman, L.A. Express (met Tom Scott), George Harrison, Miles Davis, Elvin Bishop en Joni Mitchell.

Basgitarist Jimmy Haslip (1951) leerde Robben Ford kennen in de groep Yellowjackets, die door Ford in 1977 werd opgericht (en weer verlaten werd in 1983). Haslip speelde samen met onder meer Luis Conte, Bo Didley, Booker T. Jones, Betty Wright, Paulinho Da Costa, Rita Coolidge, Vonda Shepard, Bill Champlin, Randy Brecker, Charlie Watts, Rickie Lee Jones, Dusty Springfield, Toots Thielemans, Michael McDonald, El Debarge, Gino Vannelli, Vince Mendoza, Russell Ferrante, en Justo Almario. Ook deze lijst met beroemdheden is te lang om op te noemen.

Gary Novak (1965) is de jongste en wellicht ook de onbekendste van het stel. Dat dit onterecht is toont de video hieronder. Novak is een drummer van wereldklasse en speelde al voor en samen met onder andere de Chick Corea Elektric Band, Allan Holdsworth, Lee Ritenour, George Benson, Michael McDonald, Anita Baker, David Sanborn, Ozzy Osbourne, Chaka Khan en Vinnie Colaiuta.

voor de echte smulpaap: Gary Novak geeft een fenomenale drumsolo van ruim vier minuten tijdens een optreden met Chick Corea in Polen...

Alle vier hebben ze naast hun studio- en sessiewerk ook nog de nodige solo albums uitgebracht.

In de Amerikaanse Billboard Charts kwam "Renegade Creation" binnen op nummer 6. Voor een dergelijke plaat is dat een binnenkomer van jewelste. In Nederland is de plaat nog niet echt opgevallen, maar met "Goud - 25 jaar Gerard Joling" op de tweede plaats van de Album top 100 en "Leef je droom" van Frans Duijts op de achtste krijgt het Nederlandse publiek dan ook de artiesten die het verdient.

"Renegade Creation" is een plaat voor de liefhebber. Bij mij zit hij al 2 dagen in de cd-speler en de kans dat hij daar binnenkort uitkomt, lijkt op dit moment vrij klein. Waar sommige nummers op "Renegade Creation" vette Blues zijn (The Darkness - met 'vet' in de betekenis van dik, stroperig, zwaar), zijn andere meer Rock nummers met zware Blues invloeden (God and Rock 'n Roll) en neigt een enkel nummer zelfs naar Hard Rock (Renegade Destruction). Al met al is "Renegade Creation" een klassieke Blues Rock plaat geworden die iedere artiest de kans geeft te schijnen.

Een optreden van deze groep op het aankomende North Sea Jazz festival zou niet misstaan! Jammer, jammer, jammer...

Review: Darien, "If These Walls Could Talk"

Darien starts his debut album "If These Walls Could Talk" with the encouragement to "Smile!". And that's exactly what I've done throughout the entire length of the album. Darien is a newcomer, not just in The Netherlands or in Europe, but also in his home country America. But I can tell he is a stayer as well.

I already noted Darien a few months ago. I wrote about the song "Holiday" and mentioned his - then - upcoming album "If These Walls Could Talk" in an article on this blog at the end of last year. I actually wrote that I hoped to add the album to my collection. Well, I'm happy to say that finally I have.

Let me start off with introducing the young man: Darien is an independent singer, songwriter and producer from Mount Vernon, New York.
The press kit tells of Darien's tales that are so rich and soulful you can envision every verse. I found this exceptionally true with the album's title track "If These Walls Could Talk", in which he paints the story of his mostly happy childhood: his mother, his college years, his first kiss and so on.
I was surprised to read of Darien's broad musical influences, mentioning greats like A Tribe Called Quest, Hall and Oates and Donny Hathaway. But I indeed found evidence to that in his music.
And it continues to mention his seductive and soothing melodies and some of the work Darien has done to date.

However, the press kit mentions Darien's voice only briefly. And this is curious, since his voice actually is his greatest asset. Its tone is warm and full of emotion, and its range is - indeed - phenomenal. At times, he reminds me of the young Stevie Wonder. And what is nice is that he does not show it off, but rather uses its abilities like an exceptional instrumentalist uses all possibilities of his instrument.

"If These Walls Could Talk" contains some great, polished, grown-up music. That doesn't mean it is overproduced though. It just sounds great. It is obvious that great care and attention was given to the album's sound and production. From its first tones on it's clear that this album is a product of Darien's love of music and language.

The song "Composure" kept singing around in my brain, much like a good wine sticks to a glass. It would be my favourite if this album wouldn't hold so many of those. Those background vocals are so smooth they can get you in a soulful mood all by themselves.
I love the horns in "Sail Thru" that give the song its almost eerie intermezzo. I've been missing the horns too much in contemporary music! This is one of those songs that make this album as soulful as it is.
"Love Revolution" also starts off with some great horns. They reminded me of the Dutch/Belgian jazz band Gare du Nord. In this song I guess the influence of the likes of Hall and Oates can be heard very clearly, with its sexy and subtle organ, driving rhythm, great chorus and strong bass line. Again: love the horns! This is a nicely crafted song!
"The Road" is one of the best showcases of Darien's exceptionally strong voice on the album. Wow!
"All Kinds Of Things" has a George-Benson-kinda-sound to it due to the guitar and the simple use of the organ. Its sound is nice and 'full'.
The song "If These Walls Could Talk" starts off with a simple acoustic guitar. It tells the story of Darien's life. This musical autobiography is one of the best songs on the album and certainly deserves to give it its name. You gotta love this song!

At this point though, the best has yet to come. Now, I do love a good blues song, but for someone as young as Darien to perform blues as good as he does takes some real talent. And this song, as far as I am concerned, is all the showcase I need to proof that he has just that. The 21st track on the record, with a total of 16 songs (see the track list below) is a blues song of great quality and soul. I was literally moved listening to "Whole Lotta Love", not just because of its musicality, but also because of the realization that great music is still made by great young musicians. Such a fine song! I almost can't stop hitting the repeat button.

"If These Walls Could Talk" is not easy to label, but in the end I guess labeling it as 'r&b', 'soul' or 'nu-soul' would be right. What makes it dificult though is the fact that it's jazzy and bluesy as well and on top of that it has some obvious hip hop influences too.

Wouldn't it be great to see Darien at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands one of the coming years. I can definitely picture him there!

All in all, there are no lows on this album and quite a few highs. And that certainly is a big compliment to this young musician, whose love for music and talent for crafting imaginative lyrics offers a great addition to any music collection.

Oh, by the way Darien: I'm sure your father is proud. I would be!

Scary Joe

North Sea Jazz, zondag 13 juli. Te mooi weer eigenlijk om je tot laat in de avond onder te dompelen in muziekgeweld. Maar goed, het kaartje is al gekocht en de aftrap begint voor mij bij Joe Jackson. Rasmuzikant met fraaie liedjes. Goede arrangementen van z'n eigen hits en vakkundig gespeeld op piano, bas en drum. Niets bijzonders dus eigenlijk tot hij een cover aankondigt.
"Dit is ons laatste optreden van de toer, en elke avond spelen we een cover. En vanavond is dat van een groot artiest die ik zeer bewonder." Hij begint met een staccato ritme op de piano en een loopje dat me vaag bekend voorkomt. Dan de zang, en ik denk, He, die tekst ken ik toch? En dat klopt, maar dan van David Robert Jones, aka Bowie: 'Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)'.
